The OARS ministry sponsored a Basketball Basics clinic on Saturday, December 22, 2007 from 8:30am-12:00pm. The clinic drew 50 kids (ages 5 through 12); more than half of whom do not attend Riva Trace. The clinic was publicized through a kiosk at church, a mailing to families who attended OARS Summer Sports Camp and especially through word of mouth (Riva kids inviting their friends and neighbors). Online registration was used very successfully.
The clinic included basketball instruction in dribbling skills, types of basketball passes and an introduction to shooting. The clinic also included two large group gatherings focusing on the themes of service and sacrifice. The message relayed the need to show service and sacrifice for teammates while playing basketball (service specifically on the offensive end and sacrifice on the defensive end); while drawing motivation for serving and sacrificing from the ultimate example of service and sacrifice, Jesus Christ. The campers met twice in small groups to discuss questions related to the theme and where the gospel was presented to each camper in a way they understood.
Everyone involved with the clinic had a great time. Campers each took home a water bottle and a basketball with the OARS logo on it. Several families expressed an interest in further OARS and Riva Trace events.
The OARS team hopes to hold another clinic this spring and is already gearing up for Summer Sports Camp 2008.
